Most of this story is told through messages sent by email between sisters and brothers, husbands and wives, and aunts and uncles and cousins and others who crossed their paths or helped Rosemary and her family along on their journey.
Some of the entries after the first few months are from the author's personal journal, the writing of which coincided with the "Alzheimer's Log" that chronicled Rosemary's illness, care, and new life.
Initially separate records, the documents are as intertwined here as the family members' lives.

I thought this book was great. In no time I felt a part of the family. It was a portrait of the 'normal' process families go through in trying to help their loved ones affected with Alzheimer's. I even took notes because the emails showed subtle changes that many other family members could not see and yet is what everyone in this type of situation is going through. The part about those afflicted never wanting to admit they have this disease touches home. None of us want to be frail, have our driving privileges removed, or lose our loving pets.I felt B.J. was far more patient than I could be. He showed his own vulnerability and exhaustion to the world, and the very few times he 'lost it' - gosh, who could blame him at that point, and they were so few. It does show also how no one wants to admit the disease into their lives, not only the patient but many in the family show denial that this is going on, until they absolutely must do something about it. It impressed upon me the need for legal documentation to transfer authority of that person's life to a trusting relative, before anything occurs - while the loved one is still of sound mind to make the decision. After that, any attempts of family to help their loved one often results in mistrust and the patient often wants to change who is helping them, because they don't want to be handled. It's a sad story, one you know the ending all too well - but a little book that I could not put down once I started. Thank you for sharing. It did make a difference to me.
